Oshakan village is 4 km south of Ashtarak, adjacent to the vineyards and pomegranate gardens between Ashtarak and Echmiadzin. Here is the tomb of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. In 443, on the grave of Mashtots in the south-eastern part of the village, Prince Vahan Amatuni built a small chapel on the place of which in 1875-1879 Catholicos Gevorg III had built a church that is still standing. In the front part of the altar, there is a mausoleum where the relics of Mashtots are kept under the marble cemetery at the base of the ancient chapel.
Karmravor church (Surb Astvatsatsin, VII c.) is located in the north-western part of the city of Ashtarak, Aragatsotn province, famous for its numerous historical and cultural monuments. It’s well-preserved and has reached us almost unchanged. Taking into account the small size of the church, it is assumed that it was a chapel of one of the ruling families of the time. The temple was built by Grigor and Manas priests. It is a small cross-shaped structure made in Byzantine style. Inside, there are many ornaments that were restored by Italian experts in 2015.
Hovhanavank monastery complex is located in the same village of Aragatsotn district. According to the legend, the monastery was founded in the 5th century and later was rebuilt. However, the main church was built later by Vatche Vatchutian in 1212-1221, and the Chapel adjacent to the church by his son, Kurd Vachutian. The greatest interest is presented at the entrance of the main church, where the image of Christ and the “wise and stupid virgins” are depicted.
Saghmosavank is located in Aragatsotn province, north of Mughni. The monastery was built in the 12-13th centuries by the Vachutians family and consists of four buildings – the main church of St. Sion, the hall, the library and the chapel of St. Astvatsatsin. In 1988 Saghmosavanq was seriously damaged during the earthquake. In December of 1998, the works of reconstruction of the monastery took place.
