Noravank was built in XIII century in the gorge of Gnishik River near Yeghegnadzor city. The gorge is famous for its thick red cliffs surrounding the monastery. The oldest structure of the monastery is St. Karabed Church, built in the IX-X centuries, which reached us in ruins. The main church of the monastery was built in 1216-1223, which also carries the name of St. Karabed. The temple has strict designs. Inside it, there are rich cross-stoned halls.
In 1275, on the northern side of the main church, it was built the St. Gregory Church, which was the tomb of Smbat Orbelian. This is a modest rectangular structure. The walls on both sides of the altar are decorated with cross-stones and doves. Finally, the most impressive structure of the monastery is St. Astvatsatsin / Bourtalashen. It is a two-storied church built in 1339. The main facade of the temple is cross-shaped, decorated with a carved image of the cross. In the center of the temple, there is a beautiful dome decorated with delightful columns. The western facade of the building is especially rich in decorations. Two stairs have been constructed, with the help of which it can be reached on the second floor. The base of the staircase starts from the left and right sides of the graveyard entrance. On the first floor, the door opens and the basic picture is seen, the Virgin Mary, with the baby Christ and angels, and at the top of the entrance, there is the image of Christ with the apostles Petros and Poghos.
Karahunj – Armenian Stonehenge – Old Armenian Observatory “Karahunj” is 3 km north of Sisian, 1770 m above sea level, in Syunik region, an ancient megalithic complex on the plateau. The complex consists of many large stones, some of which have a circular hole in the upper part. It is a historic and cultural reserve. Locals call this monument “Zorats Stones” (“Powerful Stones”) or “Grinding Stones”. Astrophysicist Paris Heruni called this ancient monument “Karahunj” in the name of ancient villages, two of which are in Karabakh, where ancient stones have been preserved, with untreated hand-made holes. The roots of the word are “Stone” and “Sound”, meaning a sound of a stone, a word. From 1994 to 2001 several campaigns for the Karahunj study were organized during the visit. A detailed map of the monument, its geographical latitude and longitude measurements, magnetic deviation angle measurements of angular elevations of horizons and mountain horizons for 360 ° azimuths were made. More important details have been explored in the stones and holes of the azimuths and angles. In September of 2010, Oxford University scholars along with the Royal Geographers of Great Britain studied Karahunj. The Karahunj Monument consists of the following parts: the central region, the northern flank, the south wing, the north-eastern branch, the projection (which becomes a circle) and standing stones. The height of the stones is 0.5 to 3 meters (above the ground) and weighs up to 10 tons. Stones are basalt, they were eroded in time and covered with lichen. The inner surface of the holes is better preserved. There are also many broken and crushed stones. Karahunj stone holes are a unique phenomenon among ancient monuments (observatories). The holes in these large masses provide high precision and target orientation. The weight and hardness of the stone make it a very reliable tool for many centuries to watch objects in the sky.
The cave town Khndzoresk is located on a rocky ridge and is unique in its kind, as most of the residential buildings are located inside the caves. Nevertheless, the city doesn’t have an ancient history, it is inhabited in the mid-twentieth century.
The Devil’s Bridge – From the Cave to the City passes a natural bridge. The bridge is located at the foot of the mountain at the bottom of Vorotan gorge, where the famous Tatev Monastery is located. This natural monument is 30 meters long and 50-60 meters wide. The legend says that under the bridge, people, fleeing from the enemy’s army in Tatev, were sheltered. Before the invaders attempted to attack them, the river was covered with a stone bridge as magic, saving the desperate people. At the edges of the bridge, the marvelous layers of huge stalactites are hanging in the water and pure mineral water basins have formed in the rocky rocks. In some places they create natural baths, making it an ideal place for spa treatments.
Shakeh Waterfall is located not far from Sisian, in the gorge of Vorotan River. This 18 –meter- waterfall can be considered as one of the most beautiful ones in Armenia. There is a beautiful legend about a girl who was in love with the local military leader. The girl did not want to obey and, therefore, jumped from the height of the cliff. According to legend, while jumping, the clothes were opened and the waterfall was formed.
Goris is the oldest city in the Syunik region. It is located in the southern part of the Syunik Ridge, in the valley of Vararak mountain river. The cliffs surrounding the city are known as Goris stone forest. They are an amazing labyrinth, with multi-layered tops, pyramids, corsets, and towers. Goris is a well-designed city built mainly by two-story buildings, surrounded by direct streets and green fruit parks. Goris became the capital of the CIS in 2018.
