The Temple of Garni is one of the oldest sights in Armenia worth to be seen once in a lifetime. The true and unique masterpiece of Hellenistic architecture in Armenia is one of the most ancient landmarks in Kotayk and whole Armenia which has survived since pagan period. Historians attribute its erection to the ancient-Armenian tsar Trdat who adopted Christianity as an official religion in 301. Although many scientists believe that it was constructed in the 1st century AD. According to some scholars, it was not a temple but a tomb and thus survived the universal destruction of pagan structures. It collapsed in a 1679 earthquake. Renewed interest in the 19th century led to its eventual reconstruction between 1969 and 1975. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Armenia.
